Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship Winner Announced |
The Sonny Roden Memorial Scholarship is a $1,000 scholarship awarded annually by VWEA to a graduate student enrolled at a Virginia university in an environmental engineering or science graduate program. The objectives of the scholarship are to support our local universities and to promote student participation in VWEA. Judging of the applicants is performed by the VWEA Student Activities Committee using a weighted ranking system based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, work / research experience, and an essay. The Student Activities Committee was very pleased to receive scholarships from UVA and Christopher Newport University this year, because these colleges are new to VWEA involvement. This year’s winner is Sheree Pagsuyoin, a Ph. D. candidate at UVA pursuing an environmental engineering focus. The plaque presentation will be held at the Awards Banquet at the 2008 Water JAM in Virginia Beach this September. Can't wait for September?...Read the winning essay. Congratulations, Sheree!

VWEA Education Committee Hosts Another Outstanding Seminar |
***Updated***The 2008 VWEA Education Seminar continued its tradition of presenting successful and interesting seminars. This year's seminar "Collection Systems: Out of Sight, but on the Mind – Planning, Analysis and Management for the 21st Century" which was held on April 10, 2008 had a wonderful turnout of over 140 water and wastewater industry professionals from both public and private sectors!! This outstanding seminar included 20 technical presentations and 14 exhibitor displays. We were please to have many prominent Virginia and mid-Atlantic state wastewater professionals on-hand to present their thoughts on this important wastewater issue. Technical sessions on a variety of management, planning and design issues were presented and many case studies reviewed. The seminar included a general morning session for all of those in attendance and three concurrent afternoon sessions. Attendees were able to select afternoon sessions of most interest to them and interact with presenters. Attendance was especially good considering the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Cadets had a special event and were unable to join the event this year. We look forward to their return next year!! Read more about the 2008 VWEA Education Seminar. The Seminar Proceedings are now available online. Seminar photos will be soon be available.
