The Education Committee of VWEA has a single, specific purpose of educating VWEA members and others through a one-day annual seminar held in in May each spring. The subjects of the seminars vary depending on what is a hot topic in the wastewater field for the current year. National speakers on the particular topic are sought to maintain top quality for the seminar. As a result of this quality, we draw attendees from a wide region and sometimes from distant states. The seminar usually includes a morning general session, followed by lunch and at least three breakout sessions in the afternoon. The morning session usually has 5 speakers and sometimes a panel discussion. The afternoon session each have 5 speakers as well. An equipment exhibit is also provided for review during breaks. There are usually at least 15 exhibitors. There is a lot involved in conducting a first-class one-day technical seminar, and it keeps the committee busy for the whole year. Hotel meeting and exhibit space must be contracted. An interesting and informative program must be developed. Exhibitors and speakers must be recruited. A program flyer must be developed and mailed. And a proceedings must be provided to all participants. The committee must be large to divide up and accomplish all the work. We meet at a central location 4 to 6 times a year for coordination and do a lot of e-mailing and telephoning. We always need new members with fresh ideas.
